The Designer In Me

I suppose I've always been a designer of sorts.
It started in earnest when I saw a classmate doodling during 10th grade study hall. Being bored (or nosey), I peeked over. She was drawing clothing! I was intrigued. At the time, I was not confident in my size, which was compounded by the fact that finding fashionable and flattering clothing options for larger girls was difficult. This grew into a passion, and I attained my B.P.S. in Fashion Design from Marist College.

My freshman year of college I saw a Help Wanted sign in the Fashion Department from an upperclassman who needed help with costumes for a show. I volunteered simply because I thought it would be fun to work in theater, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Even my fashion designs were theatrical. Every piece I've ever designed has had a couture aspect to it; wearable, but a little 'out there.' My Senior Capping Project was a collection based on being shipwrecked. I should have known then that makeup was only a step away.

For over ten years after college I worked the costume circuit as a designer, costume shop manager, and wardrobe supervisor/dresser. The thing is, most regional and community theaters don't hire separate hair and makeup artists - the costume designer is often responsible for the entire look, head to toe, for every character in the show. So, along with my first professional costume design came my first professional makeup design. Since transitioning from costuming to hair and makeup, I realized this: artistic creativity combined with taking care of the performers is why I made the transition.

As a result, The Makeup Curio Unusual is rooted in theatrical makeup and wig services. We offer three tiers of design services for Middle and High Schools, as well as local Community Theaters. Over the next month we’re working backstage on FIVE productions. Fellow theater nerds out there know that Tech Week is a looooong week full of collaboration and excitement, and requires a lot of patience. When working with student-age performers, all those things are intensified. It’s going to be busy, but so much fun!

We often get hired for Disney shows, or similar shows such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang or Shrek. And rightfully so, because of the non-human characters and dramatic transformations that happen. But this spring Drama Club season is bringing a series of High School productions that range from fairy tales to period pieces. No matter the show, when we do a production, we’re all in! If The Makeup Curio Unusual or my name is listed as makeup designer, even if all that is required is a few specialty makeups, you better believe every single person is wearing makeup designed to bring out their individual character! At each performance the entire cast lines up for foundation, powder, blush, lipstick, and eyeliner...at the very least. In the next few weeks, we’ll be working on monkeys, bombshells, rock stars, witches, prisoners, clowns, and more! Can you guess which shows?

Theatrical Makeup Intensive: Who, What, When, Where, And Why

The Theatrical Makeup Intensive is a two day intensive modeled after a college level course.  Here's how it came to existence. The Who: I often say this course is for every actor, technician and makeup lover. It's for teens who want to pursue makeup as a career. It's for the college student who is pursuing theater as a career. It's for adult community theater actors who want to level up their professionalism. It's for the costumer who will be having to design makeup at a small regional theater with no training. And its for a professional beauty makeup artist who loves effects and wants to introduce "glam-gore" to their portfolio. The What: While I fine tuned the course structure, kit, and handouts during shutdown, the Theatrical Makeup Intensive was actually created in 2019, with one class executed in person in Feb 2020. A hands-on course, it teaches those enrolled how to do essential theatrical makeup techniques. It has always been important to me to inco

Essential Makeup Kit For An Actor

Every actor should know how to do their own theatrical makeup. It's one of the reasons I created the Theatrical Makeup Intensive - to provide the tools for success backstage. Our Theatrical Makeup Intensive includes the Graftobian Deluxe Student Kit but it was important to me to tell you why this kit is valuable. Here's highlighting the key items every actor should have in their makeup kit: Theatrical Creme Foundations With five shades of foundation, you're sure to get the perfect shade to match your skin tone. Don't forget for large theaters, your foundation color should be slightly darker than your skin tone, as the lights always wash you out. Setting Powder Every costumer will thank you for having an arsenal of setting powder in your kit. When set with powder properly, theatrical makeup doesn't move. Outdoor theater with heavy costumes? Add an alcohol-based setting spray tp seal the deal. Eyeliner Eyeliner creates character and accentuates the eyes. Become sin

2021 Oscar Nominees - Review

It's time for my annual Oscar review of the nominees for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling.  EMMA (Amazon) Marese Langan, Laura Allen and Claudia Stolze (photo from Google Search) This elegant yet witty film is gorgeous in its hair, makeup and costuming (also nominated). The makeup is clean and simple, as appropriate for the early 1800's. Mutton chops and ringlets are why this film was nominated, as they are in abundance and the delicate makeup and soft tendrils of hair on Emma exude the innocence we are supposed to believe of her character.  It's a lovely updated version, making this the twelve adaptation of the film.  Check out Vogue's article for more insight into the looks of the film.  HILLBILLY ELEGY (NetFlix) Eryn Krueger Mekash, Matthew Mungle and Patricia Dehaney My favorite kind of makeup is character makeup. Character makeup is subtle but incredibly transformative. The actor under the makeup is familiar but perhaps you can't quite put your fing
